Donald Trump appears to have moved closer to a big-assed orange jumpsuit.
The Department of Justice in the United States have appointed a special counsel to investigate Trump’s alleged crimes. And this guy is a career prosecutor who has prosecuted war crimes in Kosovo at The Hague.
Trump has immediately sprung into action and has done what he always does: headed for a microphone and a roomful of staring idiots in Mar-A-Lago, Florida and told them he will not be treated fairly, will not get justice, it’s a witch-hunt, yada, yada, yada.
Not alone that, he went on to describe special counsel Jack Smith as “super-radical left”. Smith, for the record, is a registered political independent.
Trump’s claims, as usual, bear not relationship with reality. Special counsel, Jack Smith, is an independent lawyer and career prosecutor.
The reason for the appointment of a special counsel was explained by the Attorney General, Merrick Garland.
“In certain extraordinary cases it is in the public interest to appoint a special prosecutor to independently manage an investigation and prosecution,” Mr Garland said on Friday.
“Due to recent developments, including the former president’s announcement that he is a candidate in the next election, and the sitting president’s intention to be a candidate as well, I have concluded that it is in the public interest.”
