A High Court decision delivered by Mr Justice Twomey in March 2025 about unqualified legal advisors, lay litigants, and McKenzie friends is worth reading.
Twomey describes unqualified legal advisors as ‘malevolent’, says lay litigants would be far better off without any legal representation than having one of these unqualified legal advisors advising them, and reminds us it is a criminal offence for an unqualified person to give legal advice.
He talks about quack doctors, pseudo legal advice and goes on to list the catalogue of errors made by the lay litigants-the Barringtons-with the assistance and guidance of Mr Macken, their advisor.
You can read the entire decision here. It is worth 15 minutes of your time.
