Ernest Hemingway said “He thinks I don’t know the ten-dollar words. I know them all right. But there are older and simpler and better words, and those are the ones I use” (The ‘he’ he was referring to was William Faulkner.)
Hemingway could tell better stories with the simpler and older and better words.
I think of this quotation when commenters online suggest that I should give up flying my drone or find a different hobby or tell me they know someone who can give me lessons. They are like concerned parents watching their four year old struggle to ride a bike.
I can fly my drone just fine.
But the better stories and most watchable videos come from the crashes, scrapes, and failures. So, I publish those as vlogs, not the perfect flights into a clear blue sky with stunning views of the Irish countryside.
Hemingway knew how to tell a story. I am learning.
