“This is not who we are” rings hollow

The news over the weekend of the burning of the hotel in Galway earmarked for 70 asylum seekers later this week is an embarrassment to all of us.

The cries of “this is now who we are” rings hollow. Because this is clearly what some of us are, at least.

The symbolism of the act of what appears to be criminal damage, and the search for accommodation by asylum seekers during Christmas week 2023, is cause for shame and embarrassment.

The fact that there are certain politicians prepared to come out and double down on the “concerns of the local community” about unknown persons coming into their community is not unlike Trump doubling down on some of his odious comments.

I will carefully note the response of the various local councillors and representatives and let their statements determine how I vote in the next general election. It is the least I can do.
