The Burkes’ first court appearance of the year

I read a very funny piece in the newspaper (online) this morning by Miriam Lord. It was a description of the first appearance of the year of the Burkes of Castlebar.

The appearance was a virtual one by video link from the Ashling Hotel in Dublin 8 as the Burkes were only going to be admitted to physically attend the Court of Appeal hearing if they gave an undertaking to Mr Justice John Edwards as to their conduct.

And each of them-Sean, Martin, Ammi and Isaac-were unable to give the necessary undertaking.

Enoch Burke participated in the hearing concerning the GSOC investigation into allegations made by certain members of the Burke family against Gardai by videolink from Mountjoy prison.

The piece itself is typical Miriam Lord and worth a read.

One of the high points was Enoch Burke telling the judge that “I respect law and order, I’ve been raised to do so,” said the man in jail for defying a court order.
