Scratching the surface of history is still valuable

Listening to the BBC History Extra podcast has given me a great insight into many historical topics that I would only have been vaguely acquainted with.

Being able to dip into such a wide range of topics over the centuries, from the Byzantine, Greek and Roman empires to the Cuban missile crisis, Hitler and the second world war has been tremendously interesting and educational.

If I was studying history in university, I would probably have to focus on one period of history for my ‘serious’ study whereas a podcast like this with such a wide span of topics over many centuries gives you a real feel for enmities and suspicions between nations in the modern world.

Yes, my education may be only superficial and scratching the surface of serious historical topics but nevertheless it is an immense step forward in my understanding.
