Poor digital marketing advice for small business owners

If you are a small business owner and you are trying to make sense of online or digital marketing, you need to treat what passes for received wisdom on the subject with a degree of scepticism.

I have seen, over the last ten years or more, some appallingly bad advice for sole traders, solopreneurs, and small business owners and promoters.

One of the most obvious examples of this advice has to do with spending your time and efforts on a platform like Twitter. I have seen it time and time again: tweet after tweet being pumped out to only sink into anonymity after 15 or 20 minutes, never to be seen again.

I have done it myself.

There are effective ways of marketing you or your business online, but Twitter is certainly not one of them. In fact, I would go so far as to say it is a complete waste of time in 95% of cases.

If I was to give you one word which will set you on the right path to really exploiting the opportunities to promote your business online I would say “video”.

Anyway, you can learn more about the strategy I advise and have used for more than ten years at this point in my book.
