The world is becoming an even scarier place now, was my immediate thought having watched the six one news last night on RTE 1.
Firstly, there was a story about Meta and Mark Zuckerburg and his announcement that all of the fact checkers for the Facebook platform were being dispensed with. Zuckerburg wants to revert to what he describes as “more freedom of speech”.
This is clearly an effort to curry favour with Trump.
Secondly, there was the story about Trump’s claim that owning Greenland would be in the national interest of the United States. And the flight of his cretin son, Don Jr., to Greenland and his announcement that he did not wish to buy it.
Trump’s ignorance of principles of democracy and his boorish, racist behaviour and pronouncements about the benefits (and flaws) of democracy should set the backdrop to the understandable fears in the minds of decent democrats.
The world is even scarier now.
