“Go back to where you came from” is what Derek Blighe, the President of the Ireland First party, told Mr Gomez at the Abbeyville House, Fermoy, Co. Cork in December 2023.
Last Friday, Blighe was found guilty of threatening behaviour under Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994 and ordered to pay €350 to the Irish Refugee council.
If he pays the €350 he will get the benefit of the probation act and avoid a conviction. If he fails to do so he will be fined €400 and have a further conviction.
It turns out that Mr Gomez is an Irish citizen of some 20 years’ standing. This is the type of thing that can happen when you judge people by their appearance or other outward signs such as a name.
The Judge told Blighe that Irish people have been illegal immigrants for centuries, all over the world.
Blighe told Mr Gomez “You are a guest in this country. Shame on you….go back to where you came from”.
Blighe livestreamed the event.
Blighe denied he was a racist. He has 8 previous convictions including one for public order.
