I was contacted by a young person on Instagram recently who expressed an interest in pursuing a career in law.
He wanted to know if I would have any advice for him.
Having thought about it I concluded that the best thing he, or any young person in his position could do, would be to cultivate the habit or reading, writing and a love of books.
A love of words, or reading, writing and books is a distinct advantage to anyone pursuing a career in law.
The corollary is also true, in my view: anyone without a love of reading and without a strong habit of reading will find law a bit of a chore.
This advice is so general, however, that even if he does not eventually pursue a career in law developing a habit of reading and a love of books will serve him well in any career he pursues.
And in life, generally.
