3 principles for a less frustrating life

The meme you see on this page is one that generates quite a lot of activity, and likes, when I share it on my Instagram account.

But I did not just make the meme to generate activity or likes on social media platforms. I firmly believe in these 3 principles:

  1. Life is not fair
  2. The rules change
  3. There are no guarantees

I believe that life is a less frustrating experience if you accept each of these statements.

I learned that myself over the course of the last fifty plus years.

And then I learned that there was a sound academic and scientific basis for these principles from a book called “The Chimp Paradox” by Professor Steve Peters, a UK academic and teacher.

I see persons every week in my solicitor’s practice who are unable or unwilling to get over some slight or problem they have encountered in the workplace. They are simply consumed and obsessed with what they perceive as an unfairness or wrongdoing that occurred and are unable to forget about it and get on with their life.

This consuming obsession prevents them from accepting what has happened, from dusting themselves down and picking themselves up.

It is one of the saddest, most avoidable problems I encounter on a frequent basis, and it is almost always an employee who is beaten down with the ‘unfairness’ they have experienced in the workplace.

You get to choose your principles for getting through life. You don’t have to choose the three on this page and in my meme. But if you do I can tell you that life will go easier on you.
