I find it incredible, and frightening, that Donald Trump still appears to have such a large following and such enormous sway and influence over the Republican party in the United States.
He was involved in a New York State investigation or prosecution into the business practices of the Trump business empire. The nefarious practices appear to be concerned with fake valuations of properties in the Trump organisation.
The properties had inflated values when being financed or refinanced and probably much lower values when it came to accounting to the tax man.
Trump goes in and refuses to answer questions, pleaded the fifth-his right to not self-incriminate.
Yet this is the individual who has repeatedly, on the record, claimed he could only assume a person would plead the fifth if they were afraid to answer questions on account of their guilt.
This is the individual who has fought tooth and nail to prevent his tax returns being made public.
This is the adventurer and grifter who attempted to prevent Joe Biden taking office after Biden fairly and squarely defeated Trump in the Presidential election.
This is the man who propagates ‘the big lie’ conspiracy, despite the absence of one particle of evidence to substantiate his lies.
This is the man who, in the course of an election campaign, boasted on tape about sexually assaulting women, and who claimed they loved it when he grabbed them inappropriately. Yet this damaging admission only elicited guffaws from the male listeners who can also be heard on the tape and little or no impact in the Presidential election campaign.
Even one such incident of grabbing a woman inappropriately would, rightly, see a prosecution in the District Court. Yet this reprobate, this criminal, this boor was elected to the highest office in the United States.
And it might happen again in 2024, notwithstanding the FBI raid on his Mar-a-Lago home in the last few days.
Only in America, or some country run by a tin pot dictator or autocrat.
