It’s gas to see a Sinn Fein Health Spokesman, David Cullinane, hail the ‘common sense’ of a court judgment from the UK Supreme Court and suggest Irish courts should take cognisance.
Cullinane must be unaware of our own legislative assembly, the Dáil, of which he is a member passing the Gender Recognition Act, 2015.
I presume Cullinane was in the Dáil when that legislation passed. I presume he is aware, too, of the health issues for trans people in Ireland and the difficulties these persons face being in a significant minority grouping.
Cullinane deleted his original tweet and rowed back from the content. But it is still concerning that the health spokesman of any political party in our Republic should come out with such a simplistic reaction to a complex, multi-faceted issue.
Then again, maybe we should not be surprised at a Sinn Fein spokesperson identifying a simple and ‘common sense’ answer to complex questions. They have been at it for years.
Burn the bondholders, anyone?
