My brown soda bread-recipe and how to

Brown soda bread

This is the recipe for my brown bread, it is taken from Neven Maguire’s book, Home Economics for Life, which I would highly recommend.

Here is what you need:

8 oz strong white flour

8 oz wholemeal flour

1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda or bread soda or baking powder

2 teaspoons of light muscovado sugar

1 teaspoon of fine sea salt

¾ pint buttermilk

1 tablespoon of sunflower seeds

2 teaspoons of melted butter

1 teaspoon of golden syrup

Mix the above and put into a greased/olive oiled baking tin.

Pre heat oven to 200 C.

Then, before putting your mix in the oven sprinkle the following on top:

  1. handful of flahavan oats
  2. some pumpkin seeds
  3. some sesame seeds

Bake for 40 minutes and you should have a lovely loaf of Irish soda bread like the one on this page. If I can do it, anyone can.
